Nakawa Vocational Training College (NVTC) is a Public Vocational Training Institution under the Ministry of Education & Sports (MoES) supervised by the BTVET Department. The College was established in 1971 as a Vocational center through a bilateral cooperation by the Governments of Uganda (GOU) and Japan with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) as the executing organ of the Government of Japan. The primary objective of the establishment was to provide vocational training to workers in industries to upgrade their skills so as to enable them address the job challenges arising from the changing technology in enterprises. The support included building of infrastructure, provision of equipment, dispatch of experts and training of Ugandan instructors in Japan. The institute started with four trades; Electricity, Metal Machining, Motor Vehicle and Welding and Fabrication. Through this project, it is estimated that between 300 to 500 workers were trained and a number of Ugandan counterpart personnel were trained. Between 1997-2002, the Institute benefited from a 2nd phase project supported by the Governments of Uganda and Japan, which was implemented by JICA. The project undertook: (i) rehabilitation and expansion of the Institute facilities; (ii) provision of additional equipment and tools and; (iii) training of personnel (Instructors and Managers) staff. Three new feilds of training were added namely; Electronics, Woodworking and Sheetmetal and a new training programme (Basic Training) targeting pre employment youths was started. During the project period close to 452 youths and 165 workers from industries were trained. From 2002, a programme for consolidation of the project achievements and improving the Institute responsiveness to industrial training needs in terms of new technology in three selected fields was introduced. The programme was intended to transfer modern technologies to practicing instructors in three fields. (i) Electricity : Factory Automation / Programmable Logical Control (ii) Electronics : Digital Technology (iii) Automotive: Electric Fuel Injection The programme, which was known as Third Country and In-country Training spread out to the entire sub-region as instructors from Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Eritrea and Host Country Uganda participated. In June 2006, a complementary project for Instructor Training for Vocational Education Training (ITVET) was instituted. The project’s aim was to upgrade the competencies of in-service vocational training instructors in pedagogy and technical skills in Electronics, Electricity, Motor vehicle and Metal Fabrication. NVTI staff aligned to the project were trained in Japan as Master Trainers and participated in implementing the Diploma and Certificate in Vocational Training Instruction (CVTI and DVTI) training programmes. The first batch of 34 in-service instructors completed their 9-month course in March 2009. In 2015, JICA supported NVTI with a new Technical Cooperation project on TVET Leading Istitutions Expansion of Human Resource and Skilled Workforce Development for Industrial Sector in Uganda (TVET LEAD). The purpose of this project was to develop the capacity of the institution for human resource development responding to the needs of the private sector. The project had four components; i. Establishing Diploma programmes in Electrical and Automobile Engineering, ii. Establishing Mechatronics upgrading training, iii. Strengthening management capacity of NVTI, iv. Strenghtening the function of NVTI to support otherBTVET institutions. The project supported the institution to become a Vocational college offering qualifications aligned to the Uganda Vocational Qualifications Framework (UVQF) Level IV.
